Sunday Morning Ruckus
I was hoping that the title of this entry would grab your attention, thinking that the idea of a Sunday morning and the idea of a ruckus don't usually go together. Everyone knows that Sunday mornings are peaceful- whether you are a churchgoer or not. If you're like me, then you're probably in church on Sunday morning and if you're not like me, you're probably in bed, or reading the paper, or birdwatching. So much for the title.
The ruckus in question (I'm not sure if 'ruckus' is the word I want- maybe I should have used 'fracas,' but I'm not sure of the difference) was raised shortly after the 9am service. We had just been blessed and were ambling out of our pews when one of the deacons asked us all to sit back down. He had an announcement. He called up one of the heads of one of the church boards (I have no idea which board). He asked the chair of the Christian Ed committee if she wanted to come up. Sitting in the first pew, she just shook her head.
Now he really had our attention- for some the announcement was a shocker, but for me it was an anticlimax: The pastor is going to Guam for two months.
The church is the people, not the pastor. Maybe it'll be a good experience- a chance for all of us to learn first hand that the sun really will still come up if there's a substitute shepherd for a couple of months.
After all, it's Jesus who is our Rock...and there's only one Rock.
